Qigong can be simple exercises that can gentle stretch the muscles and joints of the body. It can thereby increase blood flow and circulation which provides health benefits. Qigong and Tai Chi can often increase energy, flexibility and balance. Studies have shown that qigong can improve balance, and improve blood pressure, fight depression and improve quality of life in cancer patients. Qigong is taught at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Qigong and tai chi can both relax and sharpen the mind. Professor Shin Lin, at the University of California, Irvine has also found they boost both alpha and beta brain waves. The increase in alpha waves of the brain suggest relaxation, and the increase in beta waves suggest focus. Slow and relaxed diaphragm breathing coordinated with movements is calming and relaxing.
